Associate of General Studies
Yavapai College offers students the opportunity to earn an Associate degree in General Studies designed for students seeking to expand their educational endeavors. The 60 credit hour program may be ideal for students who are unsure of an area of study, students who want to continue onto a bachelors degree at another institution, or those who simply need a broad understanding of academics at the college level.
The General Studies degree allows students to design an associate’s degree to best fit individual goals. The student has more flexibility in the selection of courses, as well as the option of taking courses from a variety of subject areas with no specific area of emphasis. Students will have the guidance of an academic advisor while formulating an academic curriculum suitable for their needs. Students can also begin to take the Arizona General Education Curriculum, which is a standard set of core courses designed for students wishing to continue onto a four-year college or university in Arizona or another accepting institution.
The Arizona General Education Curriculum-Business, in addition to the student’s choice of electives, is designed to lay the educational foundation for students to gain a solid understanding of critical subject matter for personal or professional interests. The required 60 credit hours are divided into two parts; 28 in the Arizona General Education Curriculum, while the rest go into interdisciplinary courses as chosen by the student. The Arizona General Education Curriculum (both the Arts and Business concentrations) incorporate essential topics of study in Intensive Writing/Critical Inquiry (IWR), Ethnic/Race/Gender (ERG) awareness, and Global/International and Historical (GIH) awareness areas.
The General Studies curriculum is comprised of critical literacy, precise writing, qualitative thinking and the process of logical reasoning. Graduates may be able to use the formal degree for immediate entry into the competitive job market, or for continuing their educational pursuits.
