Program Details
Winthrop University's online Master of Education in Literacy is designed for certified teachers who would like to add to their literacy teaching toolkit and advance to a position as a literacy teacher or literacy coach. Through a rigorous curriculum accredited by the International Literacy Association (ILA), you'll learn to implement culturally responsive, inclusive literacy instruction that recognizes the multifaceted experiences and assets of K–12 learners.
After completing the program, you'll meet South Carolina course requirements for literacy teacher and/or literacy coach certification as well as South Carolina Read to Succeed certification. You can also earn 6 hours toward a TESOL add-on certificate in the state of South Carolina if desired.
The M.Ed. in Literacy includes 33 credit hours of coursework that you can complete online full- or part-time as your schedule allows. Faculty with years of literacy education experience will deliver course topics in literacy teaching strategies, pedagogy to reach struggling learners, diagnostic practices, and literacy coaching. You can complete the program's required fieldwork at your current location or work with faculty mentors to secure convenient field placement.
