Wilkes University offers graduate students the option of earning a sought after and valuable Masters degree concentrating on Educational Leadership. Students will participate in the low-residency program to gain the credentials to become eligible for Principalship in Pennsylvania. The low-residency program requires students to attend the first course on campus to establish a bond with fellow cohort members, learn an overview of the program and start the Educational Leadership program. The dynamic degree program allows students to earn the necessary credits through online coursework, to remain in current teaching positions, while earning the advanced degree.
The Masters in Educational Leadership (EDLS) curriculum must be taken in sequential order, with the on-campus ‘The Principal as Educational Leader’ as the first course. Students may then continue onto the core curriculum. Students must complete 27 credit hours in core courses and finally the nine credits in Principal Certification courses; culminating in 36 credit hours total. The core EDLS curriculum delves into critical topics such as: Curriculum and Instruction, Special Education, School Law and Management, Communications and a two-part Administrative Internship and Applied Research Project. Some of the core courses are accompanied with a field experience requirement, to solidify professional competencies. Successful completion of the core 27 credit hours, students may then sit for principal certification and complete the remaining nine credit hours of the Masters degree program.
Upon satisfying all academic, state and national requirements, Masters students with the earned degree in Educational Leadership may seek principal positions in current institutions, or pursue a new career. Principalship roles and responsibilities are a sought after skill set that can be applied to a variety of educational institutions, as well as, in other aspects of academia and pedagogy in higher education establishments.
The EDLS Online program is approved by the PA Department of Education and is designed to meet PA Department of Education competencies for K-12 principals.
