Program Overview

Westfield State University is offering an Online Bachelor’s Degree Completion Program in Criminal Justice, which is designed for students interested in seeking employment within the Criminal Justice field. The program draws from a variety of disciplines such as social science, the humanities, and physical science, giving students a broader awareness in the role law enforcement within society. Those who earn a degree in Criminal Justice may have the opportunity to pursue various positions within the field, or they may continue their studies in order to increase their hiring potential. Students have the option of applying for an internship within a criminal justice related institution their senior year.

Courses teach students about each of the major components of the system. Students will study the role of agencies, courts, and correctional institutions and their interaction with each other. The program also teaches about the social, political, and economic issues that interact with and influence the criminal system. Themes include criminal theories, the American justice system, research methods, and the interaction between law enforcement and society. There are a number of elective courses students can select from in order to focus on their specific interests. Elective topics include those on criminal law, capital punishment, modern problems within the various levels of the system, and many others.

This program is aimed at those who have graduated from a Massachusetts Community College and have gone through the Mass transfer compact program. This program is a course selection guide for those who wish to complete their bachelor’s degree through the WSU Online Completion program in Criminal Justice. Those who have completed the compact program may earn the rest of their bachelor’s degree entirely online. Students who have not graduated from a community college or who have not completed the transfer compact may still be able to enter this program, though not all courses will be online. If students fall in this category, they are advised to consult with an admissions councilor before enrolling in the program.
