Program Overview

The Certificate of Achievement in Business Application and Database Management at West Los Angeles College is designed for students that are interested in strengthening their skills and knowledge within business application, database design, and programming. Students may gain an educational foundation in database maintenance, business concepts and E-commerce administration. Students will design in GUI application and will be able to analyze business information using spreadsheets. The curriculum will provide students experience with database administration in Microsoft, Linux and Oracle. Graduates may find careers as an application software specialist and database administrator.

The certificate program requires students to complete a total of 16 course units. The total units may be fulfilled through the completion of courses within the designated Certificate of Achievement in Business Application and Database Management course list. Students may choose courses such as Introduction to Computer and Information Security I, Web Application Programming using VB.Net, and Object-Oriented Programming in Java. The program may be completed within two semesters and is delivered through a hybrid format of both online and campus-based classes

Topics covered throughout the program will vary due to the student’s selection of courses from the designated course list.  Students may study from topics such as Cocoa Touch Programming Technique, Microsoft Office 2007, Microsoft Access database management system, and E-commerce marketing. Students have the potential to strengthen their knowledge of Oracle database concepts, network vulnerabilities, cryptography, and intrusion detection. Students should also gain hands-on experience with open source software, the security settings on Windows 7, and management of the Microsoft Structured Query Language (SQL) Server.

    West Los Angeles College, also known as West, or WLAC, is located on an urban campus in Los Angeles County, adjacent to Culver City, California. The school is a member of the California Community Colleges System, within the Los Angeles Community College District. WLAC is a public junior college that was established in 1969, and offers innovative programs that lead to the success of its students.

    Traditional transfer and associate degrees and certificates and special programs are offered at WLAC. Students participating in WLAC’s transfer programs are able to save money by completing the first two years of their bachelor’s degree for a significantly lower amount than it would cost at a university. Many degrees and certificates can be earned completely online.
