Interested in full-time ministry? If the answer is yes, then the Master of Divinity- General (M.Div.) degree offered by Wesley Biblical Seminary (WBS) could be the place to start. This degree is designed for those ready for ministry and can also be used as a prerequisite for doctoral degrees.
This online option allows active ministers the opportunity to earn their seminary degree while maintaining responsibilities at their ministry and in the community. Online courses typically require students to complete assigned readings and review written lectures. The lectures are normally short and will focus on the course topic. Some instructors may use video/audio lectures that students will be able to download.
Students who select the online program will still experience student interaction through the use of discussion boards. Discussion boards can be used as a portal to provide students with an opportunity to show their understanding of the material and can be a way for instructors to mark attendance. Students should also be able to submit assignments and exams online through the learning management system.
The general M.Div. degree consists of 75 credit hours and a language track. Students will be able to select one of three language tracks: Hebrew, Greek or English Bible. Both the Greek and English Bible tracks are offered online; the Hebrew track is only available on-campus. Students with a passion for biblical languages can also select the optional 81-hour language concentration.
The curriculum is divided into specific course topics: Interpretation (37-credit hours), Spiritual Formation (3-credit hours), Context and Mission (6-credit hours), Ministry (17-credit hours) and electives (12-credit hours). Courses may include Discipleship and Spiritual Formation, The Gospels and Worship, Liturgy and Proclamation.
Online learners are required to complete four, two-week residency sessions. These sessions are available in October at the WBS Jackson, Mississippi campus. The residency experiences should align with the seminary’s Transform: ED Conference on Christian Leadership and Spiritual Formation. The seminary’s webpage provides further detail on the residency requirement.
Some face-to-face meetings, residency requirement each fall (on-campus).
