A career as a first responder provides individuals with a fast-paced day-to-day job environment and the opportunity to make an impact on the lives of others.  Wayne Community College's Certificate in Emergency Preparedness Technology is designed to be a convenient program that builds a foundation of skills and knowledge for a successful career in emergency response.  Topics covered in the program's curriculum include investigative principals, hazardous materials, emergency agency operations, and the use of the latest planning and management software.  Previous graduates of the program have found employment in ambulance service providers, fire and rescue agencies, law enforcement, fire marshal offices, emergency medical services, industrial firms, educational institutions, and government agencies.

The certificate consists of 18 credit hours which may be completed in just two semesters.  In the student's first semester, they complete courses in Emergency Management, Municipal Public Relations, and Critical Incident Management in Public Safety.  In the second semester, individuals complete certificate requirements through enrollment in courses titled Terrorism and Emergency Management, Emergency Operations Center Management, and Civil Liability.  Online education provides students with the opportunity to complete coursework while still juggling important family, job, and community obligations.  Class sizes are relatively small, with an average of just 15 to 30 students per class.
