Program Overview

Washington University in St. Louis offers the Master of Laws degree in U.S. Law for Foreign Lawyers for professionals from other countries whose professional goals can be met by developing their understanding of U.S. law for effective practice in a global legal environment. Students will analyze and develop an understanding of the relationship between U.S. commercial, civil, and criminal laws, and their counterparts in countries with differing legal systems. Individuals will learn about trade agreements providing the basis for international trade and foreign direct investment and learn how to serve the needs of clients who need legal expertise that spans national boundaries.

Students will need to demonstrate their abilities as experienced professionals demonstrating that they have the skill and understanding of the material to study on the level expected of Ph.D. candidate students. Those classes include contracts and fundamentals of U.S. law, civil procedure and fundamentals of U.S. law, the legal system and an introduction to U.S. law and methods, legal writing, and an introduction to U.S. law and methods, professional responsibility, business associations, intellectual property, negotiation, international business transactions, and properties.  

Following graduation, students will have demonstrated the professional qualifications, except licensing, necessary for roles in facilitating trade through international business law.  Some of the qualifications needed to successfully earn the degree include the ability to demonstrate an understanding of the standards and practices regarding independent legal reading and presentation, to demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical basis of conflict in international law and the purposes of trade organizations and rules in law, to demonstrate an understanding of the relationships resulting from different business organizations and the legal effects of establishing limited liabilities companies, and to understand the role of the banking sector and issues relating to bank regulation and the effects of currency fluctuation in international business.
