Program Overview

The Early Childhood Certificate is offered from Wake Technical Community College for those who want to learn the basics and wish to become an effective assistant teacher. This program is designed as an overview of early childhood care and education, and includes the basic values, structure, organization, and programming in early childhood. Examination of the student’s personal qualities in relationship to expectations of the field is addressed throughout the courses. This program also examines the critical role of the early childhood teacher.

Students will have opportunities to reflect upon beliefs, analyze current roles, recognize strengths and develop a plan to move forward that strengthens and supports their professional growth. The program addresses all major areas of development including physical, social, emotional and cognitive. Emphasis is placed on the first eight years of life and includes research methods and developmental theories. This program is also focused on the developmental needs of young children including the business aspects of organizing and managing early childhood programs. Students will complete coursework in organizational behavior and management, childhood development, and curricula and program administration.

After students fulfill required coursework, they may be well acquainted with the education industry, be highly trained in various theories of childhood development, and exhibit advanced organizational management skills. Throughout this program, students will analyze and evaluate effective early childhood practice using critical thinking skills, active self-reflection and professional standards. They will also analyze and articulate the impact of theory, standards and current research in Early Childhood practice, as well as apply and integrate evidence-based practices in current work situations to increase learning, growth and development.
