Program Overview

The Diploma in Arts is designed for students who want to pursue a bachelor’s degree in one of the liberal arts disciplines – accounting, business administration, art, criminal justice, elementary education, English, history, nursing, political science, psychology, social work, sociology, and many others – or training at a professional school that requires a strong liberal arts background. These programs typically have fewer mathematics and science requirements than the AS or Transfer Core: Diploma in Science programs.

The Diploma of Arts curriculum from Wake Technical Community College is designed for the academic enrichment of students who wish to broaden their education with emphasis on personal interest, growth and development. Course work includes study in the areas of humanities and fine arts, social and behavioral sciences, natural sciences and mathematics, and English composition. Opportunities for the achievement of competence in reading, writing, oral communication, fundamental mathematical skills, and the basic use of computers may be provided. The purpose of the degree in general studies is to provide the student an opportunity to pursue a broad general education at a community college.

This is intended to be a flexible program for the student who is not preparing for a specific major in the lower division transfer or career-technical area. Graduates may be prepared for advancements within their field of interest and become better qualified for a wide range of employment opportunities. The learning outcomes of this program should allow students to communicate effectively through writing and speaking, understand and apply mathematical concepts and interpret numerical data, evaluate the relevance and validity of information in order to draw logical and useful conclusions, use technology to acquire and share information, demonstrate an understanding of global and cultural diversity, events, and issues, and display knowledge and skills necessary for entry level positions or continued education in a field of study.
