    School Overview

The University of Vermont is a public, land-grant research university located in Burlington, Vermont. UVM offers students the ability to pursue degrees at the bachelor, master’s and doctoral level. Founded in 1791, UVM is recognized as one of the original eight public Ivies. Ira Allen, recognized as the university's founder, provided much of the funding and planning in UVM’s beginning years. In 1865, the University of Vermont joined with Vermont Agricultural College. The University of Vermont took several socially progressive steps throughout the years. UVM was the first U.S. institution of higher learning with a charter to entirely disaffiliate from any religious denomination. In 1871, UVM accepted two women to the university and in 1875 allowed women to become full members of the prestigious academic honor society Phi Beta Kappa. Additionally, UVM again defied convention by accepting an African American student into the society.
