MSED Special Education
The University of the Southwest offers a MSED Special Education Degree that is well suited for individuals who want to work with students who have special needs. Graduates will be experts in intervention techniques that are successful in the academic achievement of these students. Individuals will explore student characteristics and specific needs that they will encounter within this field. With this degree, students will be able to teach beyond the general education classroom setting. High emphasis is placed on increasing the academic success of all students. Graduates will gain specialized knowledge in different types of teaching techniques which will allow them to work in this wide variety of classroom environments.
The MSED Special Education Degree Program consists of 36 credit hours in a variety of special education related course topics. Students are required to take leveling courses, core courses, specialization courses, and an elective. Leveling courses that are required include Introduction to Special Education, Learning & Human Development, and Culturally Diverse & Special Needs. Leveling course credit hours do not apply to the program. The two core courses that students will explore during their studies include Educational Research and Exceptional Populations in Regular Classrooms. Specialization courses that students are required to complete include Brain-Based Reading Instruction, Learners who are Cognitively Different, Learners with Learning Disabilities, Advanced Assessment, Advanced Classroom Management, Learners with Behavior Disorders, Educational & Special Education Law, Special Education Curriculum, and Methods & Materials for Reading. Last, students may enroll in Diagnostic & Corrective Reading or Reading Instruction. These courses are designed to ensure students are well prepared to further their education and obtain employment as an educator in the special education career field.
All courses for this program are available online. The online learning environment provides flexibility for enrolled students who are employed or have other obligations. Time management and word processing skills are very important for students who enroll in this degree program.
