Program Overview

The University of the Southwest offers a MSED Early Childhood Education Degree that is well suited for individuals who wish to be professionals in teaching children from birth to grade three. Enrolled individuals gain in-depth knowledge and skills which allow them to successfully work with this group of students. The MSED Early Childhood Education Degree is beneficial for those who are already in the field or those who wish to enter this career with a high quality education. Graduates will be experts in information regarding child growth, development and learning, health, safety, nutrition, and other related subjects. Students enrolled in this degree program may also complete a licensure plan that will result in obtaining a teaching license in Early Childhood Education.
 
The MSED Early Childhood Education Degree Program consists of 36 credit hours in a variety of education related course topics. Students are required to take leveling courses, core courses, and specialization courses. Leveling courses that students will complete include Field Observation, Foundations of Education, Introduction to Special Education, and Educational Technology. The credit hours for leveling courses do not apply to the degree program. Core courses that students will explore during their studies include Educational Research and Culturally Diverse & Special Needs Populations. Specialization courses that students are required to complete include Child Growth and Development, Integrated Early Childhood Curriculum, Methods & Materials, Advanced Assessment, Whole Child, Practicum I & II, Early Literacy & Language Acquisition, and Practical Issues. Students must also enroll in the Education Leadership & Supervision or Early Intervention course. These courses are designed to ensure that students are well prepared to further their education and obtain employment in the early childhood education career field.

All courses for this program are available online. The online learning environment provides flexibility for enrolled students who are employed or have other obligations. Time management and word processing skills are very important for students who enroll in this degree program.

    The University of the Southwest, private, non-denominational liberal arts university, is located in Hobbs, New Mexico. Originally founded in 1956 as Hobbs Baptist College, a 2-year junior college, the name of the institution changed to New Mexico Baptist College in 1958, when it became a four-year college. The institution became known as the College of the Southwest in 1962, and in 2008 became the University of the Southwest.
