Program Details

University of Southern Maine offers an online Master of Science in Special Education degree with an Integrated General Education and Special Education Initial Teacher Certification. Through this program, students will have the opportunity to pursue K-8 or 7-12 content area teacher certification. The curriculum was designed in partnership with school districts, special purpose schools, and other agencies to provide a well-rounded education.


  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 (4.0 scale) in a baccalaureate degree program
  • Official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended

  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Completion of Exceptionalities Course Form
  • Formal interview
  • Passing scores for Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators Reading, Writing, and Mathematics
  • Maine certification Exceptionality Course SED 540, SED 335, or course approved by the Maine Office of Certification
