Program Details

As a licensed social worker, you impact people’s lives in your community, from bereavement counseling with children to job counseling with the unemployed.  An online Master of Social Work from the University of South Dakota enables you to make a difference.  This MSW has two curriculum tracks.  There is a 60-credit hour standard track if you have a bachelor’s degree in another area.  However, USD also offers a 36-credit hour accelerated track if you already hold a social work degree from an accredited university.  Coursework includes:

  • Qualitative research
  • Social policy
  • Mental health
  • Practice with children and families

You will need to check with your individual Board of Social Work if this MSW program fulfills requirements for licensing in your state.


  • Baccalaureate degree must be from an institution with full regional accreditation for that degree.
  • Individuals holding a bachelor’s degree in social work received from an accredited CSWE program may request consideration for advanced standing.
  • An undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better for the conferred degree or demonstration that the applicant is able to maintain a 3.0 in graduate study is required. This can be demonstrated if a student has successfully completed two or more graduate courses. Advanced standing applicants must also have a minimum 3.0 GPA in social work courses. Each graduate program may admit students on provisional status per university policy.
