Program Overview

University of Maryland at University College offers a Master of Science in Management with a specialization in Homeland Security Management for professionals within homeland security and other emergency operations organizations whose professional goals and career interest involve the management of teams and activities during man-made and natural threats. Students will learn to prepare for homeland security events, learn to deal with man-made and natural threats to the safety of people and property, and learn to identify vulnerabilities at the community and organizational level.

Students in the program will study through a curriculum which emphasizes the role of management within homeland security teams and organizations. Classes include organizational theory, intercultural communication and leadership, financial decision making for managers, statistics for managerial decision making, organizational theory and behavior in a global environment, concepts in homeland security, critical infrastructures, disaster recovery, planning, and response in business continuity, security policy, ethics, and the legal environment, biosecurity and bioterrorism, and energy infrastructure security.    

Through the program, students will have demonstrated their qualifications and professional understanding of the role of information service providers in homeland security management. Those qualifications include the ability to apply the theoretical underpinnings of emergency management to practice, to apply different research methodological approaches to theoretical and practical issues in emergency management, to critically analyze the emergency management cycles applied to urban and rural settings, to demonstrate competency in assessing risk susceptibility, resilience, resistance, and vulnerability among communities and organizations, to critically evaluate the role and purpose of response and recovery in emergency planning and policy development and implications for social change, and to demonstrate advanced management skills specific to the needs of emergency management.

    The University of Maryland, University College is a public university that was founded in 1947. The main headquarters of UMUC is in Adelphi, Maryland, a town that borders College Park. UMUC is one of eleven divisions of the University of Maryland and provides quality educational opportunities for primarily non-traditional adult students. UMUC developed as a result of the popularity of evening programs for adults that were offered by the University of Maryland in the 1920’s. The University of Maryland established the College of Special and Continuation Studies (CSCS) in 1947, and in 1959 it became the University of Maryland College. The UMUC became an independent university in 1970, and in 1988 it became part of the University System of Maryland.

    The UMUC offers associate's, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in professional subjects, all of which can be earned online or in hybrid formats.
