Program Overview

University of Maryland at University College offers a Master of Science in Management with a specialization in Health Care Administration for students and professionals in management and healthcare who want to learn how management techniques are specialized when applied toward organizations that provide patient care, public health care, or other services that are related to healthcare. Students will learn about operations in health care organizations and how they function financially and within ethical and legal guidelines of behavior. Students in this program are assumed to not have any educational or professional work experience within the health care industry.

Students in the program will study through a curriculum which emphasizes the role of managers within the health care system. Those classes include organizational theory, intercultural communications and leadership, financial decision making for managers, research methods for health care managers, information technology for health care managers, the U.S. healthcare system, public health administration, financial management for health care organizations, legal aspects of health care administration, health care institutional organization and management, and organizational performance management.  

Through the program, students will have demonstrated their qualifications and professional understanding of the role of administration and management in health care. Those qualifications include the ability to demonstrate an extensive and practical knowledge-base of theory, tools, skills, practices, and research related to health care administration, management, and business practices and be able to apply these to the problems and opportunities that are encountered in the contemporary medical environments, to demonstrate effective professional and interpersonal practices essential in management, to develop a range of professional strategies that promote their effectiveness in a medical or health care organization, and to demonstrate the ethical, legal, and responsible behaviors necessary for roles in health care services.

    School Overview

    The University of Maryland, University College is a public university that was founded in 1947. The main headquarters of UMUC is in Adelphi, Maryland, a town that borders College Park. UMUC is one of eleven divisions of the University of Maryland and provides quality educational opportunities for primarily non-traditional adult students. UMUC developed as a result of the popularity of evening programs for adults that were offered by the University of Maryland in the 1920’s. The University of Maryland established the College of Special and Continuation Studies (CSCS) in 1947, and in 1959 it became the University of Maryland College. The UMUC became an independent university in 1970, and in 1988 it became part of the University System of Maryland.

    The UMUC offers associate's, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in professional subjects, all of which can be earned online or in hybrid formats.
