Program Overview

University of Maryland at University College offers the Master of International Management degree in International Financial Management for students and professionals in business that want to develop their understanding of the field of finance and how finance applies to corporate activities, including developing strategies for financing operations, mergers and acquisitions, or developing new operations. Students will study accepted practices in financial markets, thrift institutions, and commercial and investment banking while studying the fundamentals of corporate financial modeling.  In addition, students will be expected to become familiar with international management and learn about the role of finance in international organizations. Students will study strategic management, intercultural communication, and legal and financial risks through globalization.

Students will study matters of corporate activity as it relates to finance, including operations financing, banking and lending activities, and international management. Those classes include strategic management in a global environment, intercultural communication and leadership, financial decision making for managers, managing country and currency risk, managing overseas operations, strategic investment and partnering, international trade and economic policy, financial management in organizations, long-term financial management, investment valuation, multinational financial management, and financial management in organizations.

Through the program, students will develop the professional qualities and knowledge necessary for practice in business and international activities in finance. Those qualifications include the ability to demonstrate an extensive and practical knowledge-base of theory, tools, skills, practices, and research related to activities and finance and business administration, and demonstrate the necessary knowledge to solve problems and understand contemporary situations in corporate finance, demonstrate effective managerial skills necessary for managerial roles in international and multinational organizations, and to demonstrate ethical, legal, and responsible behavior and understand the necessity of multiculturalism in globalized industries.

    School Overview

    The University of Maryland, University College is a public university that was founded in 1947. The main headquarters of UMUC is in Adelphi, Maryland, a town that borders College Park. UMUC is one of eleven divisions of the University of Maryland and provides quality educational opportunities for primarily non-traditional adult students. UMUC developed as a result of the popularity of evening programs for adults that were offered by the University of Maryland in the 1920’s. The University of Maryland established the College of Special and Continuation Studies (CSCS) in 1947, and in 1959 it became the University of Maryland College. The UMUC became an independent university in 1970, and in 1988 it became part of the University System of Maryland.

    The UMUC offers associate's, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in professional subjects, all of which can be earned online or in hybrid formats.
