Master of International Management: International Emergency Management

University of Maryland at University College offers a Master of International Management with a specialization in International Emergency Management for professionals whose professional interests and career goals involve the management events and situations which affect multiple areas and regions including international borders. Students will study the utilization of emergency management techniques in helping global communities reduce vulnerability to hazards and react to international disasters through public and private organizational roles.
The curriculum focuses on materials that emphasize the role of managers in planning, responding to, and recovering during emergency situations. Those classes include strategic management in a global environment, intercultural communication and leadership, financial decision making for managers, managing country risk, managing overseas operations, comprehensive crisis and emergency management, hazard risk and vulnerability assessment, information technology in emergency management, concepts in homeland security, disaster recovery, planning, and response in business continuity, crisis communications for emergency managers, and seminar in emergency management leadership.
Upon completion of the program, students will demonstrate the professional qualifications, and be well-versed in the standards and practices of emergency management. Those qualifications include the ability to apply the theoretical underpinnings of emergency management to practice, to apply different research methodological approaches to theoretical and practical issues in emergency management, to interpret and analyze research data results related to emergency management, to critically analyze the emergency management cycle as applied to urban and rural settings, to demonstrate competency in assessing risk susceptibility, resilience, resistance, and vulnerability among communities and organizations, to critically evaluate the role and purpose of response and recovery in emergency planning and policy development and implications for social change, and to demonstrate advanced management skills specific to the needs of emergency management.

The University of Maryland, University College is a public university that was founded in 1947. The main headquarters of UMUC is in Adelphi, Maryland, a town that borders College Park. UMUC is one of eleven divisions of the University of Maryland and provides quality educational opportunities for primarily non-traditional adult students. UMUC developed as a result of the popularity of evening programs for adults that were offered by the University of Maryland in the 1920’s. The University of Maryland established the College of Special and Continuation Studies (CSCS) in 1947, and in 1959 it became the University of Maryland College. The UMUC became an independent university in 1970, and in 1988 it became part of the University System of Maryland.
