University of Maryland-University College
The University of Maryland University College (UMUC) offers degrees that are both relevant and convenient. The school focuses “on the unique educational and professional development needs of adult students”, and its flexible scheduling demonstrates this commitment. The school offers many programs, and one of them is the Bachelor’s degree in Investigative Forensics (IF).
Careers in the forensic sciences are expected to see about a 20 percent growth in the coming years, according to a study by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Careers in the field vary depending on specialties, but investigative forensics positions generally involve laboratory analysis and crime scene examinations, jobs where employees’ investigative skills are put to use.
Through UMUC’s program, students learn the skills needed to process and report evidence from a crime scene. They are given an understanding of the theory and practice of the variety of forensic disciplines and police work as well as the tangible skills of analysis and utilizing relevant tools and technologies. As a result of classes, students will be able to apply the scientific method to forensics and evidence analysis, using many resources to generate theories about a crime. Students will also demonstrate ethics and professionalism in their research and reporting.
All students are required to complete 120 credits of coursework to earn their degree. Those credits are broken down into three sections: major classes (35 credits), general education requirements (41), and minor and elective courses (34). Major classes cover topics like criminal procedures, statistical analysis, and a study of the various disciplines. Students then choose a specialization track (Scientific Specialization and Digital Specialization) in which the courses focus on the specialization’s topic. Related minors include cybersecurity and biology.
