Program Overview

The country’s safety needs have rocketed to the front of national conscious over the past few decades with an increase in global powers and global threats. This increased awareness has brought with it an increase in the need for homeland security personnel with the knowledge to manage our systems and create new and preventative measures. The University of Maryland University College (UMUC) offers a program to train students to fit this need. That program is the Bachelor’s Degree in Homeland Security (HS).

The HS program gives students the skills needed for leadership positions in homeland security. The program emphasizes domestic and international issues such as terrorism, infrastructure development, strategic planning for prevention, intelligence operations, and program management and evaluation. Courses look at homeland security from a global perspective and focus on interpersonal skills, which is critical for successful leadership and management.

Through the program, students will be able to manage technology and information in stressful and even hostile situations. They will gain the research and analytical skills needed to look at complex intelligence data and draw conclusions and recommendations from that data. Further, students will gain the communication skills needed to relay information and recommendations to outside parties as well as write clear and concise policies, plans, and procedures.

All persons must complete 120 credits of coursework to earn their degree. Those credits are broken down into major classes, general education requirements, and minor/elective courses. Major classes cover topics like legal and political issues, strategic planning, international relations, technology, intelligence, and more. Students must take at least five (5) classes at or above 300-level within the major. This degree can be earned completely online.

UMUC is one of the many branches of the University of Maryland education system. The school works to provide flexible and convenient program scheduling to meet the needs of working adults. Individuals interested in learning more are invited to contact UMUC program faculty.
