Program Overview

University of Maryland at University College offers a Graduate Certificate in Project Management for students and professionals in business that are interested in supplementing their education and career experience with the study of projects management, including the strategies and procedures for managing projects for new business ventures or expanding existing business activities. Students will learn to manage projects and develop the skills necessary in the application of project management in public and private organizations. In addition, they will develop the knowledge and skills required for the management of production projects as well as projects within different industries.

Students will study project management through a curriculum which emphasizes management responsibilities, scheduling, contracts, and other factors relating to the development of new or improvement of business operations. Those classes include orientation to graduate studies at UMUC, foundations of project management, project risk management, project communications management, project quality management, and advanced project methods.

Upon completion of the program, graduates will have demonstrated their mastery of advanced topics relating to business project management. Those qualifications include the ability to lead and deliver advanced and effective project management, to demonstrate an understanding of the theory and practice of fundamental project management disciplines and phases, to demonstrate and understanding of organizational behavior, people management, and people and cultures essential for successful project management in multicultural settings, and to demonstrate understanding of project methodologies in professional environments.

    The University of Maryland, University College is a public university that was founded in 1947. The main headquarters of UMUC is in Adelphi, Maryland, a town that borders College Park. UMUC is one of eleven divisions of the University of Maryland and provides quality educational opportunities for primarily non-traditional adult students. UMUC developed as a result of the popularity of evening programs for adults that were offered by the University of Maryland in the 1920’s. The University of Maryland established the College of Special and Continuation Studies (CSCS) in 1947, and in 1959 it became the University of Maryland College. The UMUC became an independent university in 1970, and in 1988 it became part of the University System of Maryland.

    The UMUC offers associate's, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in professional subjects, all of which can be earned online or in hybrid formats.
