University of Maryland at University College offers a Certificate in Cybersecurity for students and professionals in business. The program is designed for those who wish to develop advanced knowledge of security management as it relates to protecting information systems, networks, and data from unwanted access, destruction, or alteration as part of an effort to complement or improve their career goals with additional training and education. Students will study the fundamental issues and techniques in information systems security and will develop an understanding of information security issues and the importance of keeping systems safe from tampering and involuntary disclosure.
Students will learn about the field of cybersecurity and the different roles and responsibilities of professionals within the field. Those classes include orientation to graduate studies at UMUC, cyberspace and cybersecurity, and ethics, legal issues, and psychology of human aspects in cybersecurity.
Students completing the program will have demonstrated the qualifications of certified education in information security. Those qualifications include the ability to apply computer security strategies, to prevent intrusion, and to investigate digital attacks in order to prevent unauthorized access, to design a computer-based system, process, component, or program to meet security needs of an organization, to demonstrate an understanding of information technology roles, to apply current techniques and tools in the development, deployment, and evaluation of information technology solutions for organizational and information security, to incorporate user needs in the selection, creation, evaluation, and administration of computer-based security systems, and to formulate project plans based on appropriate systems development methods in security.

The University of Maryland, University College is a public university that was founded in 1947. The main headquarters of UMUC is in Adelphi, Maryland, a town that borders College Park. UMUC is one of eleven divisions of the University of Maryland and provides quality educational opportunities for primarily non-traditional adult students. UMUC developed as a result of the popularity of evening programs for adults that were offered by the University of Maryland in the 1920’s. The University of Maryland established the College of Special and Continuation Studies (CSCS) in 1947, and in 1959 it became the University of Maryland College. The UMUC became an independent university in 1970, and in 1988 it became part of the University System of Maryland.
