Program Overview

The University of Maryland University College (UMUC) has been providing education under the University of Maryland system’s umbrella since 1947. The school calls itself a “comprehensive virtual university [that focuses] on the unique educational and professional development needs of adult students.” With its convenient schedules and wide range of course offerings, it is no wonder that the school is well suited for adult learners. One of the many programs is the Bachelor's Degree in Fire Service Administration (FSA).

The FSA program helps students develop the skills and knowledge needed to successfully fill chief and senior management roles within a fire service department. The curriculum covers a wide range of topics, such as disaster planning, administration of fire services, personnel management, risk assessment, and the role of the fire service industry within a community. Students learn about all of the entities that play a role in fire safety and how these entities work together.

The program also places a strong emphasis on leadership skills, as it prepares students for leadership roles within the fire service industry. Students learn risk assessment skills that are necessary for improving their organization as well as greater community safety. The leadership and management skills learned help students ensure that all partners are working together for the greater good. Other than those careers directly involved in the fire service, persons involved in public safety, various government positions, law enforcement, and community planning careers will find the content to applicable to their jobs.

All students must complete 120 credits to earn their degree. The degree is broken down into three sections: major classes, general education requirements, and elective/minor courses. Major classes cover topics like emergency services, personnel management, prevention strategies, and more. General education requirements ensure students are well-rounded, particularly emphasizing communication skills such as writing and speech.

This degree can be completed online. Individuals interested in learning more are invited to contact program faculty.
