University of Maryland University College (UMUC) has been providing students with a flexible and convenient education since its founding in 1947. The school boasts “maximum convenience, flexibility, and a wide array of course selections” for its students and is dedicated to helping adults with busy schedules earn an advanced degree. The school has many programs to fit a wide range of interests and needs. One such program is the Bachelor's Degree in Emergency Management (EM).
UMUC’s EM program helps students develop the skills and knowledge needed for leadership positions in the emergency management sector. The program focuses on disaster prevention, planning, preparedness, response, and recovery.
Through the program, students will learn skills that will enable them to participate in leadership discussions and decisions in regards to emergency management protocol, routine, procedures, and programming. Students will gain critical thinking skills and a confidence in their knowledge and decision making to help them identify risks and deign response plans and procedures. The bachelor's degree enables students to work in the government and industry emergency management fields as well as lays a solid foundation for further studies in related fields like homeland security.
All persons are required to complete 120 credits of coursework to earn their degree. 30 credits will be comprised of major requirements. These major courses cover topics like emergency management concepts, policy issues, the social impact of disaster and recovery, program evaluation, terrorism, and more. The remaining credits are comprised of general education courses (41 credits) and minor/elective classes (49 credits).

The University of Maryland, University College is a public university that was founded in 1947. The main headquarters of UMUC is in Adelphi, Maryland, a town that borders College Park. UMUC is one of eleven divisions of the University of Maryland and provides quality educational opportunities for primarily non-traditional adult students. UMUC developed as a result of the popularity of evening programs for adults that were offered by the University of Maryland in the 1920’s. The University of Maryland established the College of Special and Continuation Studies (CSCS) in 1947, and in 1959 it became the University of Maryland College. The UMUC became an independent university in 1970, and in 1988 it became part of the University System of Maryland.
The UMUC offers associate's, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in professional subjects, all of which can be earned online or in hybrid formats.
