Program Overview

The University of Maryland University College (UMUC) was founded in 1947 as a part of the University System of Maryland. UMUC strives to provide a relevant, comprehensive, and convenient education for its students. The school boasts “maximum convenience, flexibility, and a wide array of course selections”, ensuring that students find a program that fits both their interests and schedules. Further, UMUC’s expansive online program offerings make completion all the more accessible to working adults. One of the school’s many programs is the Certificate in Spanish for Business and the Professions (CSBP).

The CSBP program combines Spanish language skills with professional and career related information. The program is designed to give students Spanish language foundation in a business context. Through the program, students will find themselves prepared to work and communicate in professional Spanish speaking environments.

To earn their certificate, students must complete five courses for a total of 16 credits. Four of those courses will be in upper-level Spanish. Students are required to take both Intermediate Spanish I and II as well as two upper-level elective courses which will be taught completely in Spanish. The additional 4-credit course is a Business Spanish course, also taught in Spanish, which emphasizes vocabulary and concepts needed to converse in a business setting. All certificate requirements can be completed online.

While the CSBP program does require some foundational Spanish, the program is not designed for students with native or near-native speaking ability. Individuals interested in learning more about the requirements are encouraged to contact languages@umuc.edu for more information.
