University of Maryland at University College offers a Certificate in Public Relations for students and professionals in business whose careers involve marketing or acting as public speakers for firms. Students will learn about public relations theory, including legal and ethical issues which public relations managers are responsible for, and the analytic and creative skills necessary to function in the profession. Students will study the role of internet and networked communications, including social media in order to develop an understanding of traditional and contemporary communication avenues.
Students will develop an understanding of roles and responsibilities of public relations management in conjunction with related issues in marketing. Those classes include orientation to graduate studies at UMUC, marketing management, legal and ethical issues in global communications, public relations theory and practice, public relations techniques, and crisis communications management.
Through this certification program, students demonstrate their qualifications in the theory and practice of public relations management. These qualifications include but are not limited to the ability to demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental principles of marketing, including the 4 P’s, to demonstrate proficiency in fundamental business principles and practices that allow for firms to operate in domestic and global markets, to demonstrate critical-thinking and analysis skills to develop marketing solutions, to analyze ethical issues that impact business decisions from economic, political, legal, and social perspectives, and to evaluate the application of technology as a strategy for competitive advantage in business.

The University of Maryland, University College is a public university that was founded in 1947. The main headquarters of UMUC is in Adelphi, Maryland, a town that borders College Park. UMUC is one of eleven divisions of the University of Maryland and provides quality educational opportunities for primarily non-traditional adult students. UMUC developed as a result of the popularity of evening programs for adults that were offered by the University of Maryland in the 1920’s. The University of Maryland established the College of Special and Continuation Studies (CSCS) in 1947, and in 1959 it became the University of Maryland College. The UMUC became an independent university in 1970, and in 1988 it became part of the University System of Maryland.
The UMUC offers associate's, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in professional subjects, all of which can be earned online or in hybrid formats.
