University of Maryland at University College offers a Certificate in Nonprofit and Association Financial Management for students and professional interested in developing career opportunities and abilities to function within nonprofit organizations by complementing their skill-set with knowledge of finance and how finance applies to nonprofit activities. Students will study accepted practices in financial markets, thrift institutions, and commercial and investment banking while studying the fundamentals of corporate financial modeling. Students will also learn about managerial activities in finance and will study forecasting, risk analysis, assessment methodology, budgeting, financial planning, and other critical managerial tasks. The program will prepare students as financiers with backgrounds in management, or to provide managers with specialization in financial management to improve their managerial effectiveness.
Students will focus on a curriculum which emphasizes the development of finance knowledge in the field of nonprofit financial services. Those classes include orientation to graduate studies at UMUC, financial decision making for managers, financial management in organizations, nonprofit and association financial management, and strategic management of nonprofit organizations and associations.
Through completion of the program, students will have demonstrated their qualifications to function professionally in nonprofit management of finances. Those qualifications include the ability to communicate effectively about accounting and managerial practices, demonstrating knowledge of and respect for varied audiences, evaluate financial management and managerial practices from ethical, legal, and regulatory perspectives, considering diverse stakeholders and competing interests, appraise the mission-critical role the financial management professional has as an active partner in supporting the goals and needs of the organization, and evaluate opportunities accounting professionals and managers have to promote sustainable, socially aware organizations.

The University of Maryland, University College is a public university that was founded in 1947. The main headquarters of UMUC is in Adelphi, Maryland, a town that borders College Park. UMUC is one of eleven divisions of the University of Maryland and provides quality educational opportunities for primarily non-traditional adult students. UMUC developed as a result of the popularity of evening programs for adults that were offered by the University of Maryland in the 1920’s. The University of Maryland established the College of Special and Continuation Studies (CSCS) in 1947, and in 1959 it became the University of Maryland College. The UMUC became an independent university in 1970, and in 1988 it became part of the University System of Maryland.
