University of Maryland at University College offers a Certificate in Biotechnology Management for students and professionals in biology, genetics, or other fields related to the utilization of biology and research in order to develop and commercialize research and development. Students in the program will become familiar with biotech research project management and the operations of business functions within a biotech enterprise. Students will also study the the regulatory and ethical nature of biotech ventures as they study manufacturing and production, lab supervision, as well as marketing and sales representation.
Students will study biotechnology through courses in genetics and biology as well as management as it relates to operations within biotechnical industries. Those classes include orientation to graduate studies at UMUC, societal issues in biotechnology, introduction to bioinformatics, techniques of biotechnology, biotechnology and the regulatory environment, and commercializing biotechnology in early-stage ventures.
Through the program, students will develop the professional qualities and knowledge necessary for careers related to management of biotechnological enterprises. Those qualifications include the ability to demonstrate an understanding of the societal issues, including medical care, genetic research, and the ethical and legal concerns regarding the development of biotechnology, to demonstrate an understanding of the nature of biotech ventures and management of biotech ventures, including operations, commercialization, marketing, and technology management, and to understand the phases of research in biotechnology, including statistical analysis and proper research techniques for guaranteeing data accuracy.

The University of Maryland, University College is a public university that was founded in 1947. The main headquarters of UMUC is in Adelphi, Maryland, a town that borders College Park. UMUC is one of eleven divisions of the University of Maryland and provides quality educational opportunities for primarily non-traditional adult students. UMUC developed as a result of the popularity of evening programs for adults that were offered by the University of Maryland in the 1920’s. The University of Maryland established the College of Special and Continuation Studies (CSCS) in 1947, and in 1959 it became the University of Maryland College. The UMUC became an independent university in 1970, and in 1988 it became part of the University System of Maryland.
