Program Overview

University of Maryland at University College offers a Certificate in Biosecurity and Biodefense for students and professionals in biology and genetics whose professional interests and responsibilities can be benefited and improved with certification demonstrating understanding of issues in the prevention, response, management, and clean-up plan of actions of war and terrorism  involving the use of biological material. Students will study the nature of epidemiology of infectious disease and learn about the methods of creating, storing, and spreading biological weapons.

Students will study biotechnology through a curriculum that emphasizes the utilization of biological agents as weapons, and how to prevent and respond to events resulting from biological attacks. Those classes include orientation to graduate studies at UMUC, agents of bioterrorism, biosecurity and bioterrorism, advanced biosecurity and bioterrorism, and strategies for interagency cooperation, verification, and global countermeasures in biodefense.

Through the program, students will develop the professional qualities and knowledge necessary for careers related to biological control and bioterrorism. Those qualifications include the ability to demonstrate an understanding of the societal issues, including medical care, genetic research, and the ethical and legal concerns regarding the development of biotechnology, to demonstrate an an understanding of the nature of biological warfare and bioterrorism, including prevention, reaction, response, and control to demonstrate an understanding of the necessary technology and techniques necessary for management of biological incidents, and to understand the phases of research in biotechnology, including statistical analysis and proper research techniques for guaranteeing data accuracy.

    The University of Maryland, University College is a public university that was founded in 1947. The main headquarters of UMUC is in Adelphi, Maryland, a town that borders College Park. UMUC is one of eleven divisions of the University of Maryland and provides quality educational opportunities for primarily non-traditional adult students. UMUC developed as a result of the popularity of evening programs for adults that were offered by the University of Maryland in the 1920’s. The University of Maryland established the College of Special and Continuation Studies (CSCS) in 1947, and in 1959 it became the University of Maryland College. The UMUC became an independent university in 1970, and in 1988 it became part of the University System of Maryland.

    The UMUC offers associate's, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in professional subjects, all of which can be earned online or in hybrid formats.
