University of Maryland at University College offers Certificate in Bioinformatics for students and professionals whose professional goals and careers can be improved and augmented with an understanding of the development of research projects and development of research with the utilization of information systems technology and bioinformatics techniques. Students will prepare for the responsibilities of a bio-researcher by studying topics involving biostatistics, databases and data structures, algorithms, advanced biological and genetic analysis techniques, and develop understanding of technical data structures and control systems.
Students will take part in a curriculum that combines biology, genetics, and information technology as it is utilized by geneticists and biologists in order to facilitate the collection and analysis of data. Those qualifications include the ability to demonstrate an understanding of the societal issues, including medical care, genetic research, and the ethical and legal concerns regarding the development of biotechnology, to demonstrate an understanding of the business of biotechnology, including the usage of trademark and patenting of biological and genetic data, to demonstrate an understanding of the necessary technology and techniques necessary for successful development of biological research and biotechnology, and to understand the phases of research projects, including statistical analysis and proper research techniques for guaranteeing data accuracy.

The University of Maryland, University College is a public university that was founded in 1947. The main headquarters of UMUC is in Adelphi, Maryland, a town that borders College Park. UMUC is one of eleven divisions of the University of Maryland and provides quality educational opportunities for primarily non-traditional adult students. UMUC developed as a result of the popularity of evening programs for adults that were offered by the University of Maryland in the 1920’s. The University of Maryland established the College of Special and Continuation Studies (CSCS) in 1947, and in 1959 it became the University of Maryland College.
