Program Overview

University of Connecticut offers a Master of Education degree in Professional Education for students and professionals in education who are interested in career opportunities in education and educational research. Students may do this through studying topics relating to advanced educational studies and practices. The program specializes in helping students develop their capability to perform educational research, to contribute to the field of education through educational development, and learn skills and practices for working with and developing gifted and talented learners.

Participants may develop their advanced understanding of educational development in gifted education and talent management as well as improve their capabilities to take part in educational research. The curriculum consists of courses that include Curricular Options for High Ability Learners, Staff Development and Program Evaluation, and Introduction to Gifted Education and Talent Development.

Potential qualifications of graduates include understanding past and present practices in gifted and talented education, talent development, and enrichment teaching and learning. Other skills include the ability to take part in research, field work, or an internship setting to develop innovative curriculum, acquire new instructional skills, and produce solutions to implementation problems, and proficiency in research and reference skills to efficiently perform investigations.

In addition, students will be expected to manage and monitor student learning to create, enrich, maintain, and alter instructional settings to capture and sustain the interest of their students and to make the most effective use of time, and to draw on knowledge of human development, subject matter and instruction, and understanding of students to make principled judgments about sound practice.
