Thomas Jefferson University is a private health sciences university located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The school was founded in 1824 after several attempts to establish a second medical school in Pennsylvania. At the time, both London and Paris only had only one medical school so Dr. George McClellan founded Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia. In the 20th century, the university’s facilities rapidly expanded to occupy a 13-acre urban campus near the historical area of central Philadelphia. Today, the university is thriving and is affiliated with Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Inc. Jefferson University is the largest free-standing health center in Philadelphia and Jefferson Medical College is one of the largest private medical schools in the United States.
