Teachers College at Columbia University is a graduate school for education located in New York City that was established in 1887. In 1898, the college merged with Columbia University. The school was founded by a philanthropist named Grace Hoadley Dodge and philosopher named Nicholas Murray Butler. The aim of the school was to provide education for the individuals who wished to become teachers of the poor children in New York City. Originally, the curriculum combined humanitarian concern for helping others and a scientific approach to human development. For the time period, Teachers College had high standards for their students in the late 1800s requiring them all to have a high school diploma. They continue to carry on that standard today.
