Master of Music in Music Education

Program Details

Tarleton State University offers an online Master of Music (MM) degree in Music Education designed for the adult learner whose schedule may not afford them the opportunity to attend a campus-based program.  The MM offers both a thesis or non-thesis track.  Courses are designed to be 10 weeks long so that end-of-course papers or projects do not coincide with the end-of-semester programs and performances that many music educators face.

The MM in Music Education is a 36-hour program.  Music core courses include Analytical Techniques, Advanced Arranging, and Ethnomusicology.  The Music Education core courses are Foundations of Music Education, Research in Music Education I&II, and Advanced Elementary Music Pedagogy or Advanced Secondary Music Pedagogy. The non-thesis option requires a Curriculum Project over the length of two semesters totaling six credit hours.  The thesis must likewise consist of two semesters of enrollment for six hours credit.  There are three other required courses in Technology in the Music Classroom, Ethnomusicology and Psychology of Music.
