Taft College offers an Associate in Science Degree (A.S.) specializing in Criminal Justice Administration. The program requires at least 60 semester credit hours and a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better. To be admitted into the program three competency requirements must be fulfilled in Reading, Written Expression and Mathematics.
The coursework includes Required Courses (7 hrs.), the Major Field of Study (18 hrs.), General Education Requirements (18 hrs.) and Electives (18 hrs.). The required courses are fulfilled taking a Health Education class (Veterans who have completed basic training are exempt), an American History and Institution class (History 1A, 1B or Political Science 1), and an Information Competency credit (completion of INCO 48 or passing an examination for the class).
The Criminal Justice Administration (CJA) major field of study requires Introduction to Administration of Justice and 15 credit hours of the student's choosing from the following list: Beginning Keyboarding, Intermediate Keyboarding or Microsoft Word 03, The Justice System, Concepts of Criminal Law, Legal Aspects of Evidence, Community Relations, Juvenile Procedures, Problems of Physical Evidence, Criminal Investigation, Patrol Procedures, Introduction to Corrections, Corrections Supervisor Core Course, Control and Supervision in Corrections, Legal Aspects of Corrections, Correctional Interviewing and Counseling, Public Safety Communications, Firearms Training or Reserve Officer-Firearms Training, Report Writing, Defense Tactics and Weaponless Defense, Probation Officer Core Course, General Psychology, Crisis Intervention, Personal and Social Adjustment, Introduction to Sociology, American Social Problems, Minority Group Relations, Sociology of Marriage, and Elementary Statistics.
To fulfill the General Education requirements the student must complete three credit hours in each of the following disciplines: Natural Science, Social and Behavioral Science, Humanities, English Composition, and Communication and Analytical Thinking. Finally, an additional three credit hours must be chosen from any of the above disciplines.
Elective courses must be degree applicable courses to round out the total 60 credit hours for the program.
Reading - Placement in English 6 based on placement testing or successful completion of three semester units of English 54 or higher level reading course with a grade of "C" or better.
Written Expression - Placement in English 1A on the basis of placement testing or successful completion of three semester units of English 50 or higher level writing course with a grade of "C" or better.
Mathematics - Successful completion of four semester units of Business 50, or four unit of Mathematics 50 or higher level mathematics course with a grade of "C" or better.
