Program Details

As a current professional in public safety, you can advance your career and education, while staying at the forefront of disaster response.  With a Master of Public Safety and Homeland Security from Southern Illinois University – Carbondale, you can become a leader within your organization.  You will enhance your critical thinking skills as you learn to analyze situations and apply the latest theory and practices in emergency management.  Samples of coursework are:

  • Disaster preparedness
  • Crisis management
  • Terrorism and weapons of mass destruction
  • Public policy and ethics in the fire service

SIU-Carbondale has two different curriculum tracks for earning this master’s degree.  The first track was created for students who are in public service that have graduated from a program accredited by the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Office (EFO).  All others who wish to earn a Master of Public Safety and Homeland Security will utilize the second curriculum track.
