Bachelor of Science in Ministerial Leadership

Program Details

The Bachelor of Science in Ministerial Leadership program at Southern University is designed for individuals who hope to follow a calling in an area of management and leadership within the church.  This program is ideal for students who may not necessarily wish to become pastors yet still wish to gain leadership skills for roles in faith-based institutions.  Students will have the capability to expand their skills in ministry, ecclesiastical functions, and leadership as well as their knowledge in theology and the Bible.  Graduates may pursue careers in areas such as missions, children’s ministry, church administration, and many others that will serve the Christian church.  Those who complete the program will meet the credentialing requirements with the Assemblies of God.

Students will study the different aspects of church ministry, evangelism, theology, church history, and missions as well as specialize in a certain calling.  There are four parts of the curriculum: general education core, biblical and theological studies, church leadership studies, and general electives.  General Education includes classes from a variety of disciplines such as communication, social and natural sciences, the arts, and math.

Biblical and Theological studies will explore the New and Old Testaments, the culture of a Christian university education, and biblical hermeneutics.  This section also looks into the various theologies of the church, salvation, the holy trinity, and others.  In the Ministerial Leadership Studies program, students will explore Christian spirituality, pastoral theology, ethics, and homiletics.  Students may learn about church functions such as leadership styles and development, ministry for staff members, and the business administration aspects of running a church.  Finally, students can select course electives from any department which can serve to expand their knowledge and interests as well as allow them to focus on a certain area related to their future goals.
