The Online Associate of Arts Degree program offered by Southeastern Illinois College is intended primarily to prepare students for transfer to a four year Bachelor of Arts or Sciences program at an accredited institution. By first earning an Associates Degree, students cut down what would be the cost of a traditional four-year program. By the time these students transfer, most only have core courses left to complete at their intended institution. This program can also improve the chances of gaining entry-level employment, though there is no guarantee.
This program can be completed entirely online, providing some flexibility and access to distance-based support to working professionals. This degree program is general in scope, requiring the fulfillment of basic sections rather than primarily demanding specific courses. Most courses are offered in every semester, though some are only available during certain ones. Transfer students should meet with an advisor when creating a plan of study to determine the appropriate plan of study and what courses can be transferred for credit.
To complete the program, students must earn a minimum of 62 hours of credit while maintaining at least a 2.0 overall GPA throughout. Of the total requirements, nine hours go towards work in the communications, nine to the humanities and fine arts, three additional credits from one of those sections, four to mathematics, and eight to the physical and life sciences. At least 20 hours go towards electives chosen by the student. Many Bachelor of Arts programs require developing proficiency in a foreign language, so students that plan on pursuing such a degree are encouraged to take foreign language courses at SIC.
Applicants must submit an official copy of their high school transcript or GED scores and official college transcripts to the Enrollment Services Office.
