Program Overview

The Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia, offers a Master of Fine Arts in Painting. The curriculum is 90 credit hours completed through 18 courses. These courses include: Contemporary Art, Art Criticism OR Modern & Contemporary Critical Theory, Graduate Drawing, Formal Aspects of Painting, Painting Studio I, Painting Studio II, Painting Studio III, Advanced Studio Painting Analysis, Painting MFA Thesis, two Graduate Field Internships OR Graduate Teaching Internships, Theories and Processes I, Theories and Processes II OR Painting Studio IV, Fine Art MFA Self-Promotion, and four 500 to 700-level electives.

Intensive coursework may be assigned in addition to these courses, if necessary. These courses are: Drawing Methods Studio, Graduate Painting Methods Studio, and Graduate Advanced Painting.

This degree has a limited residency requirement. Students must begin residency in either Savannah or Atlanta, take online courses during the fall and spring, and then finish residence in Atlanta or Savannah. The MFA Painting program is cohort based and begins every summer.

The MFA Painting program offers a curriculum in which students can bolster their current painting foundation by honing their techniques in contemporary art, art criticism, and critical theory. This degree is ideal for those who want a more intensive higher education in painting.

Professors foster an environment in which students can develop their own personal style and execute their creative vision. Students also have the opportunity to meet and work with renowned artists, such as, Matt Blackwell, Adam Cvijanovic, JuYeon Kim, Steve Locke and Michael Scoggins. These artists are a great way for students to become inspired and learn from the best. Additionally, the program is sponsored by the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation, which provides grants to help support the professional development of fine artists.

SCAD Painting graduates have been hired by the following firms: Buck's Rock Performing and Creative Arts Camp, Carter's, Catalyst, Custom PrintWear Inc., Emanuel County Institute, Estée Lauder Inc., Georgia College and State University, Impressions Fiber Arts & Co., Jon Sanderson Co., K.A. Vermillion Studio, Mazor Corporation, Middle Tennessee State University, Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, Nashua Children's Association, Notre Dame Academy, Palo Alto College, Renaissance Gallery of Fine Art, Rhode Island School of Design: Museum of Art, University of Florida, University of Massachusetts, and others.

    Requirements

    Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree or should anticipate completion of a bachelor's degree before enrollment in the graduate program. All applicants are evaluated individually according to previous educational experience and level of achievement.

    School Overview

    Founded in 1978, the private not-for-profit Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) first opened its doors in the historic Savannah Volunteer Guard Armory. Though the structure still remains vital to the campus, SCAD has expanded globally. The college has four physical campuses located in Atlanta, Savannah, Hong Kong, and Lacoste, France, as well as an eLearning program. The stated mission of SCAD is "to prepare talented students for professional careers, emphasizing learning through individual attention in a positively oriented university environment."

    SCAD confers bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Students can pursue certificate, bachelor’s, and master’s degree programs through SCAD eLearning. Courses at SCAD’s online campus mirror those of its physical campuses with “one-on-one attention” delivered by the same highly qualified instructors. Students have the option to complete their entire degree online, or blend eLearning with on-campus coursework.
