Online Master of Arts in Illustration

Program Details

The Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia offers a Master of Arts in Illustration. The curriculum is 45 credit hours completed through nine courses. The courses are composed of the following: Contemporary Art, Illustration Techniques I, Drawing for Illustrators, Illustration Concepts & Composition, Computer Illustration, Illustration Markets, Directed Projects in Illustration, Illustration MA Final Project, and one 500 to 700 level elective.

Intensive coursework may be assigned, if necessary. These courses include: Illustration Strategies, Drawing Strategies for Illustration, and Influences in Illustration.

The MA Illustration program focuses on practical elements of illustration, such as portfolio presentation, marketing, and invoicing. SCAD Illustration students often receive multiple accolades for their portfolios. The program emphasizes the importance of reaching a variety of audiences, while promoting their art. Students are educated on every aspect of the design process from start to finish through a variety of techniques, ranging from traditional practices to new emerging technologies.

The Illustration MA Final Project must demonstrate the student’s proficiency in illustration through a portfolio or another format. Students are expected to develop a professional portfolio that showcases their personal style through many compositions. This project must be completed in printed or digital form.

SCAD Illustration graduates have been hired by the following companies: Hallmark, American Greetings, TBC Advertising, Cartoon Network, Dutton Children's Books, GAS Design Studio, National Museum of American Illustration, Augsburg Fortress, Turner Broadcasting System Inc., Simon & Schuster, and others.


Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree or should anticipate completion of a bachelor's degree before enrollment in the graduate program. All applicants are evaluated individually according to previous educational experience and level of achievement.
