Master of Fine Arts in Photography

Program Details

The Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia offers a Master of Fine Arts in Photography. The curriculum is 90 credit hours completed through 18 courses. These courses include: Contemporary Art, Art Criticism, Graduate Critique Seminar, Digital Craft, Photographic Arts I, Photographic Arts II, Photographic Arts III, Photographic Arts IV, Issues in Contemporary Photography, Graduate Field Internship OR Graduate Teaching Internship, Photography MFA Thesis, three directed electives, and four 500 to 700-level electives.

One of the directed electives must be selected from the following: Black-and-white Craft, Color Craft, Studio Craft, and Digital Printing Methodology. The other directed elective must be selected from the following: Photographic Arts V, Graduate Field Internship, and Graduate Teaching Internship.

Intensive coursework may be assigned in addition to these courses, if necessary. These courses are: Survey of Photography, Photographic Technique and Signification, and Photography Portfolio Process.

The MFA Photography degree is ideal for individuals who want a more intensive program. The Photography program at SCAD emphasizes the importance of students to develop their own personal style by honing their acquired skills to help bring their ideas to life. The program also allows students to cater their course of study to their desired interests and professional goals. Students have the option to specialize in a variety of photography-related disciplines, including: art, commercial, photojournalism, documentary, and hybrid disciplines.

Photography students at SCAD use the current technology and software used in the industry. The MFA Final Thesis must showcase the student’s mastery of photography and prepare an original exhibition with a written component explaining the exhibition.

Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree or should anticipate completion of a bachelor's degree before enrollment in the graduate program. All applicants are evaluated individually according to previous educational experience and level of achievement.
