Program Details

Santa Barbara City College offers the online AS in Health Information Technology. This degree prepares students to manage health information in a variety of healthcare environments. The technology used today to manage health care information is constantly advancing. This field desires professionals who are capable of ensuring a secure exchange of information between individuals, healthcare providers, insurance agencies, and other entities that may handle sensitive information.

The curriculum provides students with the opportunity to explore topics in the following:

  • medical terminology
  • quality management
  • medical insurance
  • health care law
  • pathophysiology
  • reimbursement
  • pharmacology

In addition, medical coding is a highly valued and necessary skill when working in the health information technology field. Students should gain an understanding of ICD-9-CM coding, diagnostic coding, procedural coding, advanced coding applications, and computer applications that are essential to performing required tasks.

  • English and/or math placement test (may be waived based on SAT, ACT, or AP scores, or previous college courses)
