Program Details

Individuals who wish to work in the field of health information technology will need to acquire the knowledge and skills in order to manage this type of information in various health care environments. Health information is managed through technology, so there is typically a need for professionals who are able to secure information while exchanging it between providers, individuals, and other entities. The Associate of Applied Science Degree in Health Information Technology equips students with the tools they need to participate in this growing and exciting career field.

The program curriculum will provide students with an understanding of computer software and technology that is involved with the management of health information. Enrolled students will have the opportunity to explore topics in medical coding, legal issues, quality management, anatomy, physiology, electronic health records, and more. The program curriculum combines medical sciences and computer technology in order to ensure graduates possess the skills that are sought after by employers. The healthcare industry has made a large shift from handwritten to digital patient notes and records. This shift requires experts who know how to operate the software and manage the information. Upon completion of the program, graduates may find employment in hospitals, nursing homes, mental health facilities, private practices, or within a variety of other health care related settings.

Students may complete all of the work for this degree from the comfort of their home. The program requires that participants have reliable internet access and a computer. Once students graduate from the program, they are eligible to take the American Health Information Management Association Registered Health Information Technician Exam.
