    School Overview

Salem College was established in 1772 and continues today as a four-year, private, women’s liberal arts institution located in the city of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The school originally operated as a primary school and then changed to a high school, which eventually evolved into a college. It remains to be the oldest female educational establishment that is still a women’s school. Also, it is the oldest women’s school in the Southern United States and the thirteenth oldest in the entire nation. Salem was the first college in North Carolina to add a master’s degree program. Today, SC shares a campus with Salem Academy which is a residential high school for women. Salem’s mission statement is as follows “Salem College, a liberal arts college for women, values its students as individuals, develops their unique potential and prepares them to change.”

Salem offers bachelor's and master's degrees as well as certificates, many of which can be earned online.
