Program Overview

Rochester Institute of Technology offers a Certificate in Small Business Management for students interested in developing the skills and knowledge of business, marketing, and entrepreneurship necessary in managing a new enterprise and administrating its operations. In order to do so, students will need to expand their understanding of entrepreneurship and their role in leading the business and managing employees. Students will be taught the fundamental aspects of business operations in addition to general education in the functions of a business. Upon completing the program, students will need to have demonstrated the necessary understanding of financing, staffing, organization, and operations of a small business.

The program has the potential to prepare students in the responsibilities and roles of business owners and entrepreneurs involved in the development of a new enterprise. The curriculum consists of 12 quarter credit hours which may include principles of accounting, small business management, and principles of management.

Students completing this certificate program will need to have proven their capabilities to perform and interpret market research to determine the demand and feasibility for product or service, to demonstrate the ability to start and operate an entrepreneurial enterprise such as time management, continuing education and balancing business and personal life, the ability to construct a clearly written document that articulates and identifies the short and long term direction of the company with the primary purpose of sustaining its future growth, and to determine the various business legal implications to better protect the company’s physical and intellectual properties.
