Program Overview

Rochester Community and Technical College offers an intensive Medical Transcription Diploma which provides extensive training in medical transcription as well as general office skills and technology training. Students in this program learn how diseases affect the body and what drugs are used to treat these illnesses. The program stresses the building of medical terminology and handling patient reports/tests. Students enrolled in this program will be prepared to hold a transcriptionist or office support position in medical offices, clinics, hospitals, insurance companies and firms.

This online program consists of 35 credit hours that can be completed in at least one year. Full and part-time schedules are available for courses and can be started any semester.

Students enrolled in the Medical Transcription Diploma program at Rochester Community and Technical College are required to complete two General Education courses in Computer/Information Literacy and Career/Personal Development. Professionally-Related Business Requirements include subjects such as human relations, medical terminology, medical transcription, computer technology, pathophysiology and pharmacology, medical office procedures, and online computing. A computer course is also required in order to complete the program.

Students who enter this program must be proficient in keyboarding by typing at least 35 words per minute. Enrolled students who do not meet this requirement are encouraged to enter a keyboarding course. Keyboarding course BTEC 1050 will not count towards credits required to complete the program.
