Medical Secretary - Associate of Science
Rochester Community and Technical College offers a Medical Secretary Associate of Science Degree which prepares students to work in agencies such as hospitals, clinics or medical groups as secretaries to surgeons or physicians. Students will receive extensive training in medical terminology, office technology, and medical transcription. This online program consists of 60 credit hours that can be completed in at least two years.
Students enrolled in the Medical Secretary (AS) program at Rochester Community and Technical College must complete Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC) General Education requirements, Professionally-Related Business requirements, and Electives. The Minnesota Transfer Curriculum General Education requirements are classified into seven goals. These goals include courses in the following categories: Written and Oral Communication, Critical Thinking, Natural Sciences or Mathematics/Logical Reasoning, History and the Social and Behavioral Sciences, Human Diversity, and Humanities and Fine Arts, Literature, Philosophy. Elective credits are required and can be taken from classes categorized in any of the goals classified by the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC) for General Education requirements.
This program has been designed with extra general education requirements for students who may want to transfer to another program/institution. Professionally-Related Business Requirements include subjects such as human relations, introduction to medical terminology, medical transcription, business communications, pathophysiology, medical office procedures, and employment strategies. A computer course is also required in order to complete the program.
Students who enter this program must also be proficient in keyboarding by typing at least 35 words per minute. Enrolled students who do not meet this requirement are encouraged to enter a keyboarding course. Keyboarding course BTEC 1050 will not count towards credits required to complete the program.
