Program Overview

The Teaching Online Certificate Program offered by Robert Morris University prepares its students for a new world of online teaching and learning. This program is intended for K-12 and Higher Education faculty who teach in online, distant, or cyber education situations. This is a program designed to advance a teacher’s career through updating their skills and knowledge in the realm of technology. This program can also lead to further educational pursuits such as earning a Master of Science in Instructional Leadership.

This program is comprised of 15 credit hours of courses and aims to create highly qualified and skilled teachers and faculty of K-12 schools and higher education who teach in an online environment. These courses help students to develop, teach, and assess students through online education. Skills in technological capabilities as well as pedagogical subjects make up the crux of the competencies taught in these courses.

The first of five courses required by this program is Foundations of Online Teaching and Learning. This is an introductory course of the fundamentals of teaching concepts used in technology-based instruction. Theories, concepts, and practices are also applicable to high education, corporate training, and learning in general.

The second class is Advanced Techniques in Online Instruction. This course addresses advanced teaching and learning applications of the Learning Management System. This course teaches students how to develop pedagogies such as: narrated online lectures, cooperative learning, online debates, interactive assignments and activities, as well as both synchronous and asynchronous facilitation techniques.

Methods of Online Assessment is an overview of formative and summative assessments in online education. Best practices for designing and developing performance-based assessments and selected response items/tests are also taught.

Special Topics in Online Instruction goes over current issues related to distance education, video conferencing, use of webinars, social networking, use of specialized software, and emerging technologies.

Lastly, the Online Instruction Practicum is a culminating activity for the RMU certificate in Online Instruction. Students are required to develop and create an online course for use in their own area of expertise.

The Teaching Online Certificate Program offered by Robert Morris University aims to create graduates who are prepared to design and teach online courses using Learning Management System in distant or cyber learning situations. The credits earned in this program can be used to matriculate into the Master’s Degree in Instructional Leadership.

    School Overview

    Robert Morris University is a private, not-for-profit institution located in Moon Township, which is a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The school was founded in 1921 as the Pittsburgh School of Accountancy. In 1962, the school purchased 230 acres which is at its current location. A short time later, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania granted the school permission to award associates degrees, and the school became Robert Morris Junior College. Around 2002, the university changed to its present day name.

    RMU continues to offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees through following 5 academic schools:
