Program Overview

The Leadership in Simulation Instruction and Management Certificate offered by Robert Morris University is an online program that prepares health science educators to manage simulation teaching/learning systems and develop and maintain evidence-based simulation instruction. Simulation Instruction is the recreation of a real system or environment via computerized mannequins, task trainers, and trained actors as the patients. This creates a controlled and standardized condition for education, research, and training.

This program is intended for health sciences educators to learn current knowledge and experience in techniques related to simulation facilitation, instruction, and leadership. To enroll in this program, a prospective student must have earned a baccalaureate degree in a Health Sciences discipline with a Q.P.A. of 3.0; they must also submit their transcripts and a 250-word essay describing their career goals and why they are interested in the program.

The program is comprised of three sessions of eight-week courses. The first session is a class called Leadership in Simulation Facilitation and Instruction. This introductory course is an overview of up-to-date evidence of the practicality of simulation education. Models for scenario design, standards for best practice, and elements related to debriefing, evaluation and research are also taught.

The second course is Organizational Leadership and Management Concepts in Simulation. This course teaches students the necessary skills and knowledge for leading an organization’s instructional simulation program. It spans information such as strategic planning, budgeting, research funding priorities, effective management techniques, emotional intelligence, and organizational change theory.

Finally, Innovative Trends in Health Care for Simulation is the course wherein students explore trends in health care and examine concepts from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, Quality and Safety Education for Nurses regulations, and TeamSTEPPS team training content. Also licensure regulations and training concepts are covered. A final project is expected from students of this project that expresses the knowledge, skills, and competencies learned in their course of study.

Completion of this program gives educators the competencies to create and maintain programs of simulation technology for learning and assessment. This certificate will teach students how to use their specialized skill to meet the needs of healthcare providers, while providing safe quality patient care.
